European Officials Move to Curb Overfishing

Officials hailed the deal as a landmark agreement, but environmentalists said it might not be ambitious enough.

Antarctica
Antarctica
What's the most peaceful place on Earth? The largest area legally protected from military strife is Antarctica. Lying on and around the South Pole, it's about 5.5 million sq. mi. (14.2 million sq. km.) of ice-covered plateau and mountainous islands. Unsurprisingly, no humans live permanently on this coldest, windiest, highest, and driest of all the continents; the largest creature that lives on land there is the Belgica antarctica, a midge that's 6 millimeters (0.2 inch) long. One may also find penguins, whales, squid and seals in the area, as well as lice and krill, lichens and mosses. Kestrels and albatrosses fly by. But other than overfishing and whale hunting, these species and the people who come to explore, conduct research, and visit seem to coexist relatively harmoniously. The Antarctic Treaty, which defines the continent as open to free scientific investigation and closed to military activity of any sort and currently has 45 nations as parties, went into effect 40 years ago today.
Quote:
"RECOGNIZING that it is in the interest of all mankind that Antarctica shall continue for ever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and shall not become the scene or object of international discord" The Antarctic Treaty
