widget, 'People Widget'

Google Adds 'People Widget' to Gmail
PC Magazine
Over the next couple weeks, Google is rolling out the People Widget, which will make it easier than ever to see contextual information about your contacts. By William Fenton When Google isn't getting into your wallet, they're tinkering with your inbox. ...

A year ago at the same event, Kim put a lot of the emphasis on “widgets,” simple programs that appear on TV screens and exploit a format developed in an alliance with Yahoo. This year, he stressed that widgets are helpful but not sufficient; programmers need a more powerful development environment that they understand already.
The best candidate, Kim suggested, is Adobe Systems’ Flash format, which is already used to bring animations and video to Web sites. And not some stripped-down version of the technology, either, but technology that is capable of playing games and other sophisticated content. So Intel and Adobe announced plans to adapt its Flash Player 10 technology to consumer-electronics devices by the first half of 2010.

widget

n.
  1. A small mechanical device or control; a gadget.
  2. An unnamed or hypothetical manufactured article.
[Perhaps alteration of GADGET.]

The Indy 500 Trophy
How large is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway? The world's largest spectator sporting facility (it seats 250,000), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway covers 1,025 acres — the oval itself covers 253 acres. Today marks the centennial year of the Indy 500 car race; the world's largest single-day spectator sport event has been held on the Sunday before Memorial Day almost every year since 1911, only skipping 1917-18 and 1942-45, while America was at war in Europe. In the first Indy 500, winner Ray Harroun's Marmon racecar became the first known automobile to sport what would become known as a rear-view mirror. Thirty-three of the world's best drivers will compete today for the chance to get their name on the Borg-Warner Trophy. The flag drops and the cars take off at 12:00 noon ET.

dotage, dote, tops the charts, in the same boat

Happy Birthday Bob Dylan

A curious dotage

Mr Dylan just turned 70. He still tours, and tops the charts—but is he a golden oldie, or a tarnished one?

Dylan, who will be 70 on May 24th, ought to be in McCartney’s boat, but somehow finds himself in Lennon’s. His albums have been getting more successful, not less. “Modern Times”, released in 2006, went to number one in America, the first Dylan album to do so since “Desire” 30 years earlier. His last set of new songs, “Together Through Life” (2009), went to number one both in America and in Britain, where he hadn’t topped the chart for 39 years. No living person had ever returned to number one after such a long gap.

The Mediterranean on a Budget: The Voyage Begins

By SETH KUGEL
Thursday was the beginning of what sounds like a foolhardy adventure: high season in the Mediterranean on a budget.

Circus chief to be space tourist

Guy Laliberte
Guy Laliberte will become the seventh private citizen to go to the ISS

The founder of Cirque du Soleil, the circus performance group, is set to become Canada's first space tourist in September.
Guy Laliberte, 49, will travel to the International Space Station (ISS) on a Russian Soyuz for a flight estimated to cost at least $25m (£15m; 18m euros).
The Quebec-based billionaire will become the seventh private citizen to visit the ISS since April 2001.
Past visits by paying space tourists have lasted from a week to 13 days.

Laliberte has said in past interviews he wanted to travel into space one day.
He follows in the footsteps of other successful entrepreneurs, including California businessman Dennis Tito and American software executive Charles Simonyi.
Mr Simonyi, the latest tourist to visit the ISS, took his second trip in March, spending an estimated $60m (£37m; 42m euros) on both space voyages.
Laliberte has built a fortune estimated at $2.5bn (£1.5bn; 1.8bn euros) from the Montreal circus, which has grown into a global organisation with $700m (£432m; 495m euros) in sales.
The flights are organised through the Virginia-based company Space Adventures.

ins and outs, going all out, all-in

HEARD ON THE STREET
Going All-In on LinkedIn
Help wanted: To explain the rocket-fuelled IPO of LinkedIn. Welcome to dot-com mania, part two.

all out

With all one's strength, ability, or resources; not holding back. For example, They are going all out to make the fund-raiser a success. This seemingly modern term dates from about 1300, when it meant "completely" or "wholly." It now refers to making a great effort and is also used adjectivally, as in an all-out effort. This usage became current in America in the late 1800s, with reference to races and other kinds of athletic exertion. In the mid-1900s it gave rise to the phrase to go all outgo whole hog.

This usage alludes to the tortuous windings and turnings of a road or path. [Second half of 1600s]
2. Those with position and influence and those without, especially those in office versus those who are not, as in "Juan stood well both with Ins and Outs" (Byron, Don Juan, 1823). [Mid-1700s]
