Congratulations to those who celebrate Christmas today!

Icon (Carved): Christmas Palestine, between 1801 and 1860

The celebration of Christmas and New Year was accompanied by a series of balls, masquerades and feasts. Since the time of Empress Catherine II, a New Year's Eve dinner was organized in a crystal tent erected in the hall of the court theater. Following this tradition, the royal family and in the XIX century on the first day of the new year dined in a luminous tent made of patterned glass.

In the XIX century, Christmas Eve in the Winter Palace on the residential halves according to the custom, imported from Germany, trees were installed for all households.
The chambers housed tables decorated with gifts. Small surprises were hung on the branches of specially made iron Christmas trees with copper ornaments. In 1848, six "Christmas trees with iron knots and copper ornaments" were made for the Empress Alexandra Fedorovna and the lottery.

A colorful description of Christmas Eve in the Winter Palace during the reign of Nicholas I was left by the maid of honor of Empress Alexandra Fedorovna Baroness M.P. Fredericks. According to her memoirs, "on the eve of the Nativity of Christ, on Christmas Eve, after the Vespers, the Empress always had a tree for her august children, and the whole retinue was invited to this family holiday."

The "big tree" for the imperial family and the nearest retinue was usually arranged in the chambers of the empress and in the neighboring halls, the Concert and Rotunda. After the Vespers in front of the closed doors, "all the children fought and pushed among themselves, the tsars, inclusive, who would be the first to enter the treasured hall. The Empress went ahead to inspect all the tables again, and our hearts beat with joy and curiosity of expectation. Suddenly a bell rang "the doors opened, and we rushed into the hall lit with a thousand candles. The Empress herself brought everyone to the appointed table and gave gifts. One can imagine how much joy, pleasure and gratitude poured out at that moment."

"The emperor and the tsar’s children each had their own table with a Christmas tree, decorated with different gifts, and when the empress herself gave the gifts, then they entered another room, where a large, long table was decorated, decorated with various porcelain elegant items from the imperial ... manufactory. Then a lottery was played between the whole retinue, the emperor usually shouted a card, the winner approached Her Majesty and received his gift-win from her hands. " On this day, in the rooms of the royal children, where "little Christmas trees" were already standing, "young grand duchesses and young grand dukes gave each other different trinkets."

I see your hideous truss manufactory in Trafalgar
Square comes up in this controversy, and that very manu-
factory brings to my mind a ridiculous instance of my
poor friend's weakness. I had been running over with
him a few of the principal violations of aesthetic laws in
London, illustrating the lesson by reference to the stucco
palaces of my beautiful Berlin. After despatching the
Duke of Wellington's statue and the black dome and grey
pepper-boxes of your National Gallery, I came to Coles's
manufactory. * Can anything be more atrocious ? ' I asked.
' It is bad,' answered my poor friend ; ' and yet,' he went
on, ' and yet, Arminius, I have a tenderness for that manu-
factory. That manufactory, with other things in London
like it, is one of my favourite arguments for the immortality
of the soul.' * What folly have you got in your head now ?'
said I. ' Remember,' said he, ' what is told us of the
statue of the Olympian Zeus by Phidias. It was life enough
to have seen it ; felicity had then reached its consummation ;
the spirit could grasp no more, and the man might end.
And what therefore, I ask, must not be in store for the
British ratepayer, who in his life has only seen the Duke
of Wellington's statue and Coles's truss manufactory ? His
felicity must surely be yet to come. Somewhere, beyond
the grave,' .... and for a good twenty minutes my simple
