“Man has to cope with the problem of suffering. The Oriental wants to get rid of suffering by casting it off. Western man tries to suppress suffering with drugs. But suffering has to be overcome, and the only way to overcome it is to endure it.”

Jaded in Japan
'Strolling through a Garden' a lithographic reproduction of a ca. 1909 kuchi-e (口絵) print, by Suzuki Kason (鈴木華邨, 1860-1919) Image size: 5/8 x 8 3/4 inches + margins.
Kuchi-e (口絵) are frontispieces of books, especially woodblock printed frontispieces for Japanese romance novels and literary magazines published from the 1890s to the 1910s.
They usually portrayed women and were bound to the book's spine or inserted into literary magazines to give readers a sense of what type of stories were to unfold. Most kuchi-e were woodblock prints in romance novels intended for a female audience. Some were lithographs, and some were inserted into other types of literature. The first mass-produced publication to regularly feature kuchi-e designs popular literary magazine Bungei Kurabu, with over 230 individual inserted from 1895 to 1914. Most measured either 22 × 30 cm (8.7 × 11.8 inches) or 14 × 20 cm (5.5 × 7.9 inches), the former being folded in thirds, and the latter being folded in half.
The general standard of kuchi-e prints was remarkably high. Made at a time of well developed woodblock printing techniques, it is thought the addition of these prints contributed to almost half the cost of production. Still, the genre is often under-appreciated as an art form.
The standard text on the subject is Merritt and Yamada's "Woodblock Kuchi-e Prints - Reflections of Meiji Culture" (2000).
But Lamprecht has meanwhile tried to rectify the situation and get to the truth. She said that she drove 120 km (75 miles) from Hamburg to Büsum in northern Germany on Monday to try to confirm the story that has since become jaded.
A public increasingly jaded about the damages from the Iraq war should demand the commander in chief face up to the sufferings of his returning troops.
