WHO calls for ban on cigarette advertising

The World Health Organisation has called for a ban on all tobacco
advertising to protect young people from taking up smoking. The
United Nations agency said tobacco companies were successfully
targeting young people in increasingly sophisticated marketing
campaigns. It noted that product placement in fashion magazines,
films, web-sites, concerts and sporting events were sending out a
false allure, associating cigarettes with "glamour, energy and sex
appeal." The WHO said that it had surveyed 13-to-15 year-olds around
the world, and found that over half had reported seeing cigarettes
on billboards in the previous month, and that one in five owned an
item with a cigarette brand logo on it. Most smokers take up the
habit as teenagers.
