German police ban "anti-Islamification" rally in Cologne

German police have banned a right-wing nationalist group from staging an "anti-Islamification" rally in Cologne. A police spokesman said public safety was at stake, after police battled with left-wing supporters who flooded into the city centre to stage counter-demonstrations. The nationalist group Pro-Cologne had called the rally to oppose a decision by local authorities to build one of Europe's biggest mosque's in Germany's fourth largest city. The group had invited nationalists from across Europe to gather in Cologne to protest against what it called the "Islamification and immigration invasion" of Germany and Europe. An estimated 120,000 Muslims live in Cologne. The city is widely viewed as one of Germany's most tolerant and well integrated major cities.

Britain on Friday asked its citizens to be vigilant when travelling to Denmark due to possible attacks, following Koran burnings by anti-Islam activists in Denmark and Sweden that have outraged Muslims.6rate Show phonetics
