It might be thought that the origins of the New Year’s Concert date back to the days of Johann Strauß I himself, but it actually has its roots in a morale-boosting “extraordinary concert” given by the Vienna Philharmonic under Clemens Krauss on New Year’s Eve 1939. The programme for that first event holds no surprises: the much-loved waltzes and polkas that have been the mainstay ever since, such as the irresistible Pizzicato-Polka and Tales from the Vienna Woods, are already in place.
For the next concert, the date shifted to New Year’s Day, and under Willi Boskovsky, who led the concerts from 1955 to 1979, the event developed from a Viennese institution into an international one. From the first radio and television transmission in 1959, the broadcast audience has grown from a national to a European and ultimately an international one, a trend reflected from 1980 onwards as one famous conductor after another has mounted the podium to welcome in the New Year with a Viennese swing.

A Look at Taiwan’s Strongest Earthquakes
Earthquakes of similar intensity to the one that hit the island on Wednesday have caused large-scale death and destruction.
Chi-Chi, 1999
A 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in September 1999. The quake, which struck about 90 miles south-southwest of Taipei, was the second-deadliest in the island’s history, according to the U.S.G.S. and the Central Weather Administration. More than 10,000 people were injured and more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.
Yujing, 2016
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in February 2016 caused a 17-story apartment complex in southwestern Taiwan to collapse, killing at least 114 people. The U.S.G.S. later said that 90 earthquakes of that scale or greater had occurred within 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, of that quake’s location over the previous 100 years.
