Fritzl pleads guilty to incest, not murder and enslavement

At a trial opening in Austria the man accused of imprisoning his daughter for 24 years in a cellar and fathering her seven children has pleaded guilty to incest but contested charges of murder and enslavement. Prosecutors allege Josef Fritzl failed to seek medical help for a newborn who died in 1996. If convicted, Fritzl, aged 73, faces long-term imprisonment. The case caused shockwaves when it became public with Fritzl's arrest in the Austrian town of Amstetten last April. Media have been allowed to watch the trial's start in Sankt Pölten, but further courtroom proceedings are expected to take place behind closed doors, to protect the victims' identities. Jurors will see their testimonies on videotape.
