Soul food appears to be dying in much of New York City in the face of changing tastes and eating habits. Louise’s Family Restaurant, above, has survived.
Soul food is an American cuisine, a selection of foods, and is the traditional cuisine of African Americans of the Southern United States and of black communities beyond. In the mid-1960s, "soul" was a common adjective used to describe African American culture, and thus the name "soul food" was derived.
