Francisco Goldman's passionate, moving novel takes as its subject his tragically short marriage to the fiction writer Aura Estrada, who died in a bodysurfing accident in 2007, when she was 30.

Bodysurfing is the art and sport of riding a wave without the assistance of any buoyant device such as a surfboard or bodyboard. Bodysurfers typically equip themselves only with a pair of specialized swimfins that stay on during turbulent conditions and optimize propulsion.

To get on the wave, bodysurfers must pick a direction, swim, kick, or paddle hard, use their back or an outstretched arm, and ride the wave in a streamline position. Left and right turns can be performed by digging the shoulder into the wave, causing the person to slide to the side of the wave. After catching a wave, in order to exit the wave a person must drop the head and a very rapid tumble turn will exit the person out of the wave. Care must be taken to execute the maneuver with no hesitation, flipping the feet over as quickly as possible. Always ensure the water is deep enough so that no injury is brought about by the head, neck, and shoulders when hitting the sand. A variation of this is to roll over the shoulder rather than directly 'head-over-feet'. Simple techniques include spins, barrel rolls, and the ever-popular getting pounded or 'dumped' - colloquially known by surfers as 'eating carrots'.
