But the government has its work cut out for it, if the sort-of debate in the House of Lords is anything to go by.
After Lord Hunt’s assurances that the government had no plans for a motto and his colleagues’ insistence on discussing one anyway, Lord Conwy had a thought. Why, he asked, could they not just use the French “Dieu et mon droit,” which means “God and my right?”
Lord Hunt replied: “As the noble lord will know, that represents the divine right of kings. While it is of course a well-known phrase, one would need to reflect on whether that would be entirely relevant to a motto that we are not going to have.”

A revolution of sorts is sweeping education.

In the past few years, educational material, from handwritten lecture notes to whole courses, has been made available online, free for anyone who wants it. Backed by big-name universities in the U.S., China, Japan and Europe, the Open Education Resources movement is gaining ground, providing access to knowledge so that no one is 'walled in by money, race and other issues,' says Lucifer Chu, a 32-year-old Taiwanese citizen and among the thousands world-wide promoting the effort. He says he has used about half a million dollars from his translation of the 'Lord of the Rings' novels into Chinese to translate engineering, math and other educational material, also from English into Chinese.

Free Online College Courses Are Proliferating

Film Director Dörte Franke Premieres Stolperstein Documentary

An important aspect of the process Gunter Demnig is the interaction he has with onlookers when he is laying the stone.

Since it’s instigation, the Stolperstein project has gained an international reputation and the small plaques can now be found in various other European countries including Hungary and Austria and starting this year Poland, Ukraine and France. An important aspect of the process for the artist Gunter Demnig is the interaction he has with onlookers when he is laying the stone. This process also caught the attention of the young German film maker, Dörte Franke, who subsequently decided to make a documentary about the Stolpersteine. 34 –year –old Franke grew up in the former East Germany, studied political science, Germanistik and history in Cologne and later dramaturgy in Potsdam. Her documentary about the Stolpersteine was launched last week.

Exhibition Remembers Victims of National Socialism

Demnig’s "Stolpersteine" or stumbling stones project has become a quest of sorts, to remember those who were persecuted and killed by the Nazis.

Cologne is currently hosting an exhibition that features a project aimed at remembering the victims of National Socialism in Germany. Artist Gunter Demnig’s "Stolpersteine" or stumbling stones project has become a quest of sorts, to remember those individuals -- Jews, homosexuals, Sinti, Roma, dissenters -- who were persecuted and killed by the Nazis. Demnig began collecting the names of victims of National Socialism and then creating small four-by-four-inch brass-topped plaques with names and dates, which he then embedded into the sidewalk at the address where that person used to live. And what set out to be a small project, has now grown beyond Gunter Demnig’s wildest expectations.
