flinch and flinching, patten, sole, overshoe

Boots and Pattens, 1825-30, Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York.
By the 1820s, ankle height boots had become the desired day footwear for a large percentage of women. The downside was that even these sort of boots, meant mostly for wear outdoors were constructed of flimsy, lightweight leathers or fabrics, so they offered little protection on roughly paved and muck-ridden streets. Pattens were an answer. They both helped protect from the filth on the street and also offered a modicum of support to the foot. This example is a true rarity. Many shoes have from this period, and some pattens have as well. It is a very rare thing to have a pair of boots with their matching red leather pattens survive together.
