For the second day running, everyone focuses on the government takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which is expected to be announced later today. The New York Times pokes through the two mortgage-finance giants' entrails, revealing that the multi-billion dollar bailout was prompted in part by the discovery that Freddie Mac had overstated its capital cushion, presenting itself as more stable than in fact it was. Fannie Mae was in slightly better shape, but would have struggled to remain afloat once the government took action against Freddie Mac.
