Because of an editing error, an obituary on Wednesday about René Girard, a theorist of the social sciences, referred incorrectly to his book “Deceit, Desire, and the Novel.” The book introduced his idea that people seek things in life based on what other people want; it did not introduce “the idea of mimesis.” The error was repeated in a picture caption with the obituary, which also referred incorrectly to the book as a novel. It is a work of nonfiction. And the obituary misstated, in some copies, the surname of the author of a coming biography of Mr. Girard. She is Cynthia Haven, not Haden.
