Spotlight
John Muir "I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in." The man who spoke these words, John Muir, turned his love of nature into a cause. He was an early conservationist and was instrumental in saving Yosemite Valley and other parts of California's Sierra Nevadas. On this date in 1892, Muir founded the Sierra Club, to work to protect the earth's natural resources and ecosystems and, in his words, to "make the mountains glad." To honor his contributions to environmentalism, the California state quarter sports an image of John Muir.

MEMORABILIA

Le Corbusier died in 1965, but this year he has been honored twice. In April, his image appeared on the Swiss 10-franc note, left, as part of a series celebrating 20th-century artists and cultural figures. With more than 31 million of the notes in circulation, Le Corbusier is omnipresent. And those who want to delve deep into Le Corbusier's mind can now duplicate in paint the exact colors the architect designed for two wallpaper collections produced by Salubra.
Le Corbusier created 43 colors in 1931, and 20 more in 1959. Each time, he arranged them sequentially, ''according to color moods,'' said Arthur Ruegg, an architect in Zurich who edited the three-volume ''Le Corbusier: Polychromie Architecturale'' (Birkhauser). The book includes text and photographs, as well as his chromatic ''color keyboards'' ( shown below with an example of a wall pattern). ''The big colors are the walls and the little colors are the doors, tables and niches,'' Dr. Ruegg said.
The set of three volumes is $180 through Jan. 31; $225 afterward, from (800) 515-2475.
