Torah, law-table, tables of stone, pomegranate,

This evening marks the beginning of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Pomegranates are seen as symbols of fruitfulness and wisdom, and are traditionally eaten at Rosh Hashanah. Their seeds are said to represent the 613 commandments, or mitzvot, in the Torah.

This small pomegranate-shaped juglet, excavated in Jerusalem, was made around 700–587 BCE.
