Extraterrestrial Seekers Get Big Backing
Radio astronomer Jill Tarter's cause -- the search for extraterrestrial intelligence -- has been embraced by a geek-chic collective of technocrats and wishful thinkers.




Steven Spielberg is preparing to launch a new social network for people interested in sharing paranormal and extraterrestrial experiences, TechCrunch reported.




Because its color suggests a flame or blood, Mars was named the "star of fire" in the East and the "star of war" in the West.

The planet has also inspired fantastic stories about its supposed inhabitants, the Martians. In his 1898 classic "The War of the Worlds," British author H.G. Wells (1866-1946) depicted Martians as octopus-like creatures. Somehow, his image remained the prototype for extraterrestrials for years.
