lemon

(lĕm'ən)

adj.

[Middle English limon, from Old French, from Old Italian limone, from Arabic laymūn, līmūn, from Persian līmūn.]

lemony lem'on·y adj.

WORD HISTORY Although we know neither where the lemon was first grown nor when it first came to Europe, we know from its name that it came to us from the Middle East because we can trace its etymological path. One of the earliest occurrences of our word is found in a Middle English customs document of 1420–1421. The Middle English word limon goes back to Old French limon, showing that yet another delicacy passed into England through France. The Old French word probably came from Italian limone, another step on the route that leads back to the Arabic word laymūn or līmūn, which comes from the Persian word līmūn.“檸檬”

Lemonade is a soft drink that is made with lemons. In the U.S. and Canada, lemonade refers to an uncarbonated mixture of lemon juice, sugar, and water. Pink Lemonade is a variant of traditional lemonade made by the addition of grenadine or other red juice, or by using pink lemons [1]. In the UK, Australia, Switzerland, and New Zealand, the term mainly refers to a clear, carbonated, sweet lemon-flavoured soft drink. In India it is commonly referred to as "Nimbu Paani" meaning "Lemon Water" or Shikanji and is sold by many street vendors, especially in North India.

History
Lemonade, in its uncarbonated form, is among the oldest of commercial soft drinks, dating at least back to the 17th century. In Paris in 1676, a business called the Compagnie de Limonadiers was formed and granted monopoly rights to sell lemonade, which their vendors dispensed in cups from tanks carried upon their backs. [2] The French term limonade has since come to mean "soft drink" in many languages.

hc問 rl :請解釋 語尾ade 檸檬是否從法國翻譯過來
rl答"如引文所示:Lemonade 源自法文 limonade.字尾-ade在法語中,多半屬由動作演變而來的抽象名詞,至於-ade構成水果飲料名詞,應該不只有檸檬,要再查閱字首字尾及字根方面的辭典。"

小讀者:"-ade suff.A sweetened beverage of: limeade.

[Middle English, from Old French, ultimately from Latin -ata feminine of -atus, -ate.
