"mummers" or "Wren Boys," Straw Boys Lá an Dreoilín(鷦鷯日)

Also known as "mummers" or "Wren Boys," Straw Boys are a vibrant part of Irish folk tradition, especially associated with weddings and seasonal celebrations. Their roots run deep in rural Ireland, where they have long been known to bring laughter, music, and good cheer to community gatherings.

A key tradition tied to the Straw Boys is Lá an Dreoilín—Wren Day—celebrated on December 26th, or St. Stephen’s Day. On this day, groups don elaborate costumes made of straw and colorful fabrics, concealing their identities as they parade through towns and villages. They carry a decorated pole featuring a wren, either real in the past or symbolic today, and perform music, sing traditional songs, and collect donations.
While the wren was once hunted as part of the custom, the ritual has since evolved. Today, it’s a lively cultural event often used to raise money for charity rather than symbolic burials.
This enduring tradition showcases Ireland’s rich folklore and love of storytelling, music, and communal celebration.
