Harvard experience defines senior guard

Harvard captain Christian Webster owns the school record for career victories (89) and is determined to extend that mark to 90 and beyond.
The senior guard will get that chance when the 14th-seeded Crimson (19-9) take on No. 3 New Mexico (29-5) in the NCAA Division 1 West Regional tomorrow night at 9:50 in Salt Lake City.
Webster is making his fourth straight venture into postseason play, an unprecedented achievement in the 102-year history of Harvard’s basketball program. He played in the CollegiateInsider.com tournament as a freshman, the National Invitational Tournament in 2011 and the NCAA tournament as a junior. The Crimson captured the Ivy League title outright last year and qualified for the NCAA tourney for the first time since 1946.
Harvard has never won a postseason game at any level (0-6), and this is Webster’s last chance to help eradicate the March hex.
Webster speaks with the voice of NCAA experience, an authority no other Harvard senior leader has ever commanded.
“The difference from last year is we are a little bit more confident and a little bit more relaxed going into this tournament,” Webster said prior to the Crimson leaving for Utah. “It can be nerve-racking when you first come to the stadium and see that big blue (NCAA) logo and the TV cameras. You know that everyone in America is watching and it is a big deal. But last year we were a little nervous and this year we are more relaxed and confident; that will help us focus on the game.”
Webster played a prominent role in Harvard returning to the Big Dance. He has started 22-of-28 games and is averaging 8.4 points, and he is able to work and play at an institution that values basketball as an extracurricular activity and not a religion.
“It is definitely challenging at Harvard and it is something the coaching staff recognizes,” Webster said. “They help us out with our academic schedules and set up practices around that. At Harvard, academics come first and athletics come second, and that is what we focus on. We get our work done on the floor and we get our work done off the court, and that’s how it is presented.”
Nine of the 12 players on the roster were in the program when the Crimson warranted a 12 seed last year and lost 79-70 to No. 5 Vanderbilt in an East Regional matchup in Albuquerque, N.M.
“When you have a point of reference you just have a different view about the tournament,” Amaker said. “That doesn’t mean everything (is) going to go your way and that you are going to make every shot and not make any mistakes. I do think when you have a point of reference you have a comfort level that players adjust to.”
