During the 17th-18th century in France and England courts, it became fashionable to wear French Mouches: fake moles made of taffeta, silk or satin and glued to the face, neck or shoulder. It started as a way to hide smallpox scars and acne and quickly evolved as a fashion accessory to greater and more advanced shapes. It was worn by both men and women but more predominantly young women. Depending on the placement, it had a different name and meaning:
