James always maintained that clever boys were not pale little swots, but were more, not less, likely to be good at other things as well. The school had a good games record, and, as the High Master put it, was one of the foremost in "Outward Boundery". Art, music and drama were encouraged: Ben Kingsley and Robert Powell were both at Manchester Grammar during James's time.

a field full of water in which rice is grown 水田, 稲田(rice paddy).

Volume one of his memoirs, Colours of the Mountain, recounted his first 16 years, spent growing up in Fujian (south China) in a persecuted landlord's family during the cultural revolution. Bullied at school, the disaffected Da Chen hangs around with drinking, smoking, gambling chums, before realising his only escape route from a life in the paddy fields lies in passing the national college exams that are reinstated in 1978 after the end of the cultural revolution. After months of swotting, the hooligan-turned-wunderkind comes good and becomes the first person from his village to get into a Beijing university to read English.

"While most people drive their cars on the highway, Horie chooses to drive on the shoulder," Haruo Shimada, a Keio University economics professor, said in an interview. "Many times, he goes into the rice paddy, but then he claims he is still on the shoulder. He really behaves like that, and many people get mad and upset by his behavior."
Partly by "exploiting loopholes," Professor Shimada said, Livedoor expanded into a conglomerate of almost 50 companies.
