First Lady Betty Ford
First Lady Betty Ford
Betty Ford never expected to be First Lady. But when she married Jerry Ford, her life took a different turn. She has said of her White House predecessors, "Now that I realize what they've had to put up with, I have new respect and admiration for every one of them." In 1974, Mrs. Ford underwent radical surgery for breast cancer. She discussed her situation candidly and encouraged women to have breast examinations and to face similar surgery without embarrassment. Later, she spoke of her addiction to alcohol and drugs with equal candor and she opened The Betty Ford Center in California to help others deal with substance dependencies. Happy 90th birthday to former first lady Betty Ford.
Quote
"My makeup wasn't smeared, I wasn't disheveled, I behaved politely, and I never finished off a bottle, so how could I be alcoholic?" — Betty Ford
