hen he was a boy, few would have singled out Peng Ming-min as a future firebrand. Born in 1923 in Taiwan, then widely known as Formosa, he was bookish and other-worldly, with his main extra-curricular passion being baseball not politics.

By 1997, however, he was his own man. His role was of national political importance. His writs were more widely respected than the ministers whose policies he enforced. The former "progressive" teacher became a firebrand fighting for traditional methods.


What I love about her is she’s a firebrand for average working people. When we worked together to raise the minimum wage in 1996 Republicans controlled both chambers, but she was determined.

China’s flagging economy is causing people to drown their sorrows. That’s fine by Kweichow Moutai , the country’s largest maker of baijiu, the national firewater. The $332 billion distiller reported a 24% net profit jump in the first quarter as sales touched 33 billion yuan ($5 billion). It’s an historical record, per Refinitiv data, accompanied by solid progress on its initiative to boost margins by cutting out middlemen. Direct sales contributed a third of revenue, twice as much as a year earlier.
