Australia to ban alcohol for Aborigines

Australia has said it will ban alcohol and pornography in Aboriginal communities across the country's vast Northern Territory to combat widespread child sexual abuse. Prime Minister John Howard described the plight of Aboriginal children as a "national emergency".

The measures are a response to a Northern Territory government report last week that found rampant child abuse fuelled by alcohol abuse in Aboriginal communities. Some Aboriginal leaders have criticised the measures as paternalistic. Aborigines are the country's poorest
community, with a much lower life expectancy and higher rates of infant mortality and domestic violence than the rest of the population. (6/22/07)
