Newt Gingrich and G.O.P., faction, Democratic party

80年代末、90年代初，美國國會議長Newt Gingrich (共和檔黨) 幾乎不可一世。他向戴明博士學習：家教約30小時。約1997年，他也有「醜聞」，被美國人民唾棄。真妙，他這兩年又再一次掘起，勢如破竹，連敵對的民主黨都佩服。

每日一詞 ：GOP | “大老黨”是什麼黨？

最近，時報社論漫畫師帕特里克·恰帕特一幅名為《特朗普的共和黨人牆》的作品描繪了這樣的畫面：特朗普撅著嘴坐在桌前，手上拿著外界對自己的指控，而他的面前站著一堵人牆，上面寫著“GOP”。

GOP是什麼意思？根據韋氏詞典，GOP指共和黨，是該黨別稱Grand Old Party的縮寫。這一縮寫起源於1875年，那時人們將共和黨稱為“Gallant Old Party”（勇敢的老黨），該詞之後演變為“Grand Old Party”（大老黨），並最終以GOP的形式流傳開來。

GOP這個縮寫常常見諸報端，同時也被用於共和黨官方網站及社交媒體賬號。然而，知道GOP真正含義的人並不多。 2011年一項調查則顯示，甚至近半數的共和黨人也同樣不知道這三個字母代表什麼。

Ideologically, the Republican Party favours business and opposes welfare. Because US parties are so weak and open, it is hard to pin any other ideological label on to it. A large but not dominant faction attempts to hitch the party to the values of Christian fundamentalism. The party is sometimes known by the acronym GOP (for Grand Old Party). Its symbol is the elephant.
