Taiwan holds military parade to make statement to China

As a part of its National Day celebrations, Taiwan has held a military parade, designed to be a show of strength to its neighbour China. F-16 fighter jets and helicopters circled over the capital Taipei and several home-developed missiles were on display.

In a televised speech, President Chen Shui Bian called China's military build-up a threat to the world and demanded that the People's Republic recognize Taiwan's sovereignty. He also said his government would continue to fight for membership in the United Nations. Taiwan has been shut out of the UN since China's entry in 1971.
