dental dam, rubber dam

Dentistry: An Illustrated History

A thin sheet of latex rubber used to isolate a tooth or teeth and keep them dry during a dental procedure.

━━ vt. (-mm-) せきとめる; ふさぐ ((up)); (激情を)抑える ((up, back)).)

dental dam noun [C]
a piece of rubber which is used to keep the teeth dry during dental treatment, or which is used to prevent HIV infection during sexual activity in which someone touches someone else's sexual organs with their mouth or tongue

(from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary)
