Diplomacy
US and Chinaf hunker down or talks on way forward on North Korea

With the region still in a stir following the death of Kim Jong-Il, senior US and Chinese officials have held high-level talks in Beijing to discuss stability in the reclusive North.

Undeterred by the coronavirus pandemic that has brought most of the US economy to a halt, truck stops remain open, offering truckers a place to eat, rest and refuel on their way to delivering critical supplies to a nation that's hunkering down to slow the spread of Covid-19

CNN.COM The New York Times leads with the streams of refugees who are fleeing the Swat Valley out of fear of a full-scale attack by Pakistan's army against Taliban forces that have hunkered down in the area and declared an end to the peace deal with the government. Taliban militants have apparently taken up positions in the Swat region and laid mines in preparation for an attack. American officials are optimistic this could be the sign they were waiting for that Pakistan's government is willing to wage war against the Taliban, but it's still far too early to tell whether the effort can be sustained in the long term.

Plenty of scholars sweated through the 20th century trying to reconcile inconsistencies across the great sweep of Marx’s writing, seeking to shape a coherent Marxism out of Marx. Sperber’s approach is more pragmatic. He accepts that Marx was not a body of ideas, but a human being responding to events. In this context, it’s telling that Marx’s prime vocation was not as an academic but as a campaigning journalist: Sperber suggests Marx’s two stints at the helm of a radical paper in Cologne represented his greatest periods of professional fulfillment. Accordingly, much of what the scholars have tried to brand as Marxist philosophy was instead contemporary commentary, reactive and therefore full of contradiction.
