「搓磨」(grind)是食品加工的技術，兩手反覆揉磨稱之「搓」，碾碎研細稱為「磨」。經常搓了又搓，磨了又磨，食品才好蒸煮。
搓磨是世界各民族都有的技術，例如中國人用手去作湯圓，稱為「搓湯圓」；以麥製作麵粉，稱為「麥子磨粉」。
搓磨也用在教育方面，例如古人說：「能受天磨真鐵漢，不遭人忌是庸才」。也用在經擠方面，例如「搓磨窮人的臉」(grind the faces of the poor)，這句話後來成為有錢、有權者，欺壓窮人，獲取不當利益的慣用語。......
