Inland. Inlandish. outlandish A Rube Goldberg machine. The greater intention was that of changing Western civilisation, away from “the materialist way of life” to one where a transcendental dimension was registered, not by faith but by experience and experiment. –
OUTSIGHT was a bold plan to bring together and give mescaline and/or LSD to fifty to a hundred of the world’s pre-eminent minds, including Einstein, Jung, A. J. Ayer, and Graham Greene. The intention was that “of changing the intellectual climate,” as lead instigator Osmond put it to fellow organiser, Huxley. The greater intention was that of changing Western civilisation, away from “the materialist way of life” to one where a transcendental dimension was registered, not by faith but by experience and experiment. –
Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was an American cartoonist, inventor, and engineer who created cartoons depicting complex machines performing simple tasks. His work is known for being funny and impractical, and his name is now used as an adjective to describe complicated systems.
Life:
Born in San Francisco, California on July 4, 1883
Earned a degree in mining engineering from the University of California, Berkeley
Worked as a cartoonist for the Evening Mail in New York
Also wrote a movie script called Soup to Nuts that introduced the Three Stooges
Died in New York City on December 7, 1970
Work:
His cartoons often featured complicated machines that used chain reactions to perform simple tasks
His work was popular with the public and was displayed in the Museum of Modern Art
His work was meant to spoof Americans' love of technology and their reluctance to do things simply
Legacy:
His name is used as an adjective to describe complicated systems
There are many "Rube Goldberg Invention Contests" held in the United States each year
His work has been featured on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube

Rube Goldberg’s Greatest Machine Is His Legacy
Decades after Mr. Goldberg, a cartoonist, died, artists and engineers have found creative inspiration in his outlandish inventions.
Professor Butts and the Self-Operating Napkin (1931). Soup spoon (A) is raised to mouth, pulling string (B) and thereby jerking ladle (C), which throws cracker (D) past toucan (E). Toucan jumps after cracker and perch (F) tilts, upsetting seeds (G) into pail (H). Extra weight in pail pulls cord (I), which opens and ignites lighter (J), setting off skyrocket (K), which causes sickle (L) to cut string (M), allowing pendulum with attached napkin to swing back and forth, thereby wiping chin.
A Rube Goldberg machine, named after American cartoonist Rube Goldberg, is a chain reaction–type machine or contraption intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and (impractically) overly complicated way. Usually, these machines consist of a series of simple unrelated devices; the action of each triggers the initiation of the next, eventually resulting in achieving a stated goal.
The design of such a "machine" is often presented on paper and would be impossible to implement in actuality. More recently, such machines have been fully constructed for entertainment (for example, a breakfast scene in Pee-wee's Big Adventure) and in Rube Goldberg competitions.
