ONE year ago bears on China were a rare species. People scoffed at Jim Chanos, a well-known short-seller, who predicted that China would end up “like Dubai times 1,000, or worse”. Nor did they heed Hugh Hendry, the eccentric boss of Eclectica Asset Management, who posted a homemade video of himself wandering Chinese streets and gawking at abandoned skyscrapers on YouTube.

voluble, volubility, charisma, a brick of a mobster,

Paul Sorvino, Master of the Mild-Mannered Mobster, Dies at 83

A would-be singing star, he found success in Hollywood playing a variety of roles: often quiet, dangerous men, like Paulie Cicero in “Goodfellas.”

Paul Sorvino was a voluble man who excelled as a brick of a mobster, a critic writes.

Only a few years ago populist nationalists exercised voluble sway over the region’s politics. Now Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez is dead, Cristina Fernández is out of power in Argentina and Rafael Correa has opted not to run again in Ecuador

This could be because the view from outside was and is entirely different from the view from within. When Time magazine puts Wowereit on its cover, it shows that the man's charisma is capable of successfully selling the Berlin brand on a global scale.

(By Mary Jordan, The Washington Post)
“Sarah,” Mr. Small said, slightly abashed. After she left he said proudly: “She has charisma. Thirty years ago, when my voice wasn’t that strong, I really did choose my friends in part for their volubility. All I wanted to do was sit in the corner and draw.”

voluble
adj.

  1. Marked by a ready flow of speech; fluent.
    1. Turning easily on an axis; rotating.
    2. Botany. Twining or twisting: a voluble vine.
[Middle English, moving easily, from Old French, from Latin volūbilis, revolving, fluent, from volvere, to roll.]
volubility vol'u·bil'i·ty or vol'u·ble·ness n.
volubly vol'u·bly adv.

(The Power of Management Capital),書中應用有五處”slash and burn”,讀者可利用Amazon 的全文搜索去讀一下。

slash and burn (日文: 焼き畑式の.;完璧に破壊する)

“slash and burn的二個英文解說為: “Of or being a form of agriculture in which an area of forest is cleared by cutting and burning and is then planted, usually for several seasons, before being left to return to forest. “

Drastic or destructive: "The past few years of painful, slash-and-burn expense cutting have made top brokerage executives reluctant to revert to their former, profligate ways" (David Henry).”
