Together they discussed religion; and their chosen code name for God, Onion, becomes a symbolic theme that threads its way through the narrative: the many layers of faith, the humility faith asks of the believer, the connection between belief and tragedy -- all of that conveyed through the ordinary, lowly onion, which one can peel and peel, though with tears.
