"Put an end to this royal infantalising of a nation. Imagine how abolishing the monarchy would open all the dusty constitutional cupboards to the sunlight of reform. Let her reign as long as she lives – but let her be Elizabeth the Last."

Sarah Churchwell, the cultural critic and American professor of literature at the University of East Anglia, argues that Hollywood's heyday, from 1930 to 1950, "is most striking with regard to its representation of women". On screen now, she says, women are largely "infantilised": "You only have to compare the voices of current stars to those of Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck or Lauren Bacall. Those women were altos – cultured, elegant, stylish women."

Modern art gets a boost from the Vatican

This week Pope Benedict XVI opened an exhibit at the Holy See, containing the works of sixty contemporary artists from around the world.

Painters, sculptors, even jewellers, were invited to reflect on universal themes, in choosing their entries. Jean di Marino has more.

“Mr. McNamara must not escape the lasting moral condemnation of his countrymen,” The New York Times said in a widely discussed editorial, written by the page’s editor at the time, Howell Raines. “Surely he must in every quiet and prosperous moment hear the ceaseless whispers of those poor boys in the infantry, dying in the tall grass, platoon by platoon, for no purpose. What he took from them cannot be repaid by prime-time apology and stale tears, three decades late.”

For years the Metropolitan Museum of Art displayed the painting of a mustached man in his mid-30s on the same wall as famous portraits of Juan de Pareja and Maria Teresa, infanta of Spain by the 17th-century Spanish master Velázquez.

According to Matthew 2:1 – 12, they followed a miraculous guiding star to Bethlehem and brought gifts of "gold and frankincense and myrrh." In later Christian tradition they were said to be kings and were given the names Melchior, Balthasar, and Gaspar.
