China's July exports were hurt by a big drop in business with the European Union—but some of the blame also goes to a long-term deterioration in China's export competitiveness.

Japanese research and development firm Eamex claims to have found a new way to increase the typical average life of a high-capacity lithium-ion battery. Eamex’s new technology will allow the demanding batteries to sustain over 10,000 recharges over the course of 20 year.
This rather dramatic increase in performance is made possible by new techniques such as a stabilization process of the battery’s electrodes, which in-turn puts less stress on the battery’s tin.
This maintains the bonding of particles for a longer period of time and reduces the overall deterioration process. The result is a battery that lasts up to 10 times as long as most current batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are broadly popular within various consumer electronics. They tend to hold their charge when not in use, and have a high energy-to-weight ratio. Current lithium-ion batteries can hold their charge for up to 1,000 charge cycles.

Electric car goes the distance (HIROYUKI KOBAYASHI/ THE ASAHI SHIMBUN)
Engineer Tadashi Tateuchi holds up a sign displaying the distance he traveled in an electric vehicle--555.6 kilometers--during a 13-hour-plus journey Tuesday from Tokyo to Osaka. It is the longest distance covered by an electric vehicle on a single charge, according to Tateuchi, who heads the citizens group Japan Electric Vehicle Club. He plans to register the feat with the Guinness Book of Records. The two-seater minicar, powered by about 8,000 cylindrical lithium ion batteries, weighs about 1,060 kilograms.(IHT/Asahi: November 18,2009)
go the distance

Carry through a course of action to completion. For example, He said he's willing to go the distance with this project. This expression originated in boxing, where it means "to last for all the rounds that have been scheduled." In baseball the same term means "to pitch an entire game." For a synonym, see all the way, def. 1.

A telomere is a region of repetitive DNA sequences at the end of a chromosome, which protects the end of the chromosome from deterioration or from fusion with neighboring chromosomes. Its name is derived from the Greek nouns telos (τέλος) "end" and merοs (μέρος, root: μερ-) "part". The telomere regions deter the degradation of genes near the ends of chromosomes by allowing for the shortening of chromosome ends, which necessarily occurs during chromosome replication.[1] Over time, due to each cell division, the telomere ends do become shorter.[2]
During cell division, enzymes that duplicate DNA cannot continue their duplication all the way to the end of chromosomes. If cells divided without telomeres, they would lose the ends of their chromosomes, and the necessary information they contain. The telomeres are disposable buffers blocking the ends of the chromosomes, are consumed during cell division, and are replenished by an enzyme, telomerase reverse transcriptase.
