「文藝復興人」在英文裏是renaissance man (sic)，二十年前我讀美國中國近代史專家費正清的回憶錄時第一次看到這個名詞，他講到台灣國民政府外交部長葉公超時說：「He was a Chinese renaissance man who was embraced both cultures.」（他學貫中西，是一個文藝復興人。）關於Renaissance man這個名詞，在英國《牛津字典》及《朗文字典》上都沒有這一條。據美國《韋氏字典》解說為：「A person has wide interests and is expert in several areas.」（一個人興趣廣泛，在某些方面，他是一個專家。）在《蘭燈字典》（Random House　Dictionary）解釋﹕「A person of broad intellectual and cultural interests encompassing the full spectrum of available knowledge.」（一個人對思想、文學、藝術有很廣泛的興趣，並且具有全盤了解的一般知識。）前者解釋很扼要，後者較為明確，讀者可以把上述兩種解 說合起來讀。《韋氏字典》還說明Renaissance man作上述解釋肇始於一九〇六年。
