Ringgit (Malay for "jagged") mostly refers to the Malaysian ringgit, which is the local currency in Malaysia, but it can also refer to the Brunei dollar in the Malay language. The word ringgit was originally used to refer to the serrated edges of Spanish silver dollars widely circulated in the area before the introduction of their own currency.

令吉是由马来语中的Ringgit翻译过来的，马来语中Ringgit的原意是“齿”，由于以前西班牙银币在东南亚一带非常流行，而西班牙银币的周边又有齿型，因而得此名称。
1975年8月，马来西亚政府正式规定其货币名称为Ringgit。中文就是令吉。1975年8月前，国际间都以元(Dollar)和分(Cent)来称呼马来西亚的货币。
1990年，马来西亚政府规定，马来西亚货币的标号为“RM”取代之前的“M$”。

零吉改为令吉的主要原因是因为“零吉”中的“零”会在书写时产生混乱。

  • 2000零吉如果全文以汉字书写将是二零零零零吉，由此产生混乱。

另一种说法是，零吉可以解释成“无吉”，故希望该改个好兆头的名称。故2004年以后，马来西亚华语规范理事会规定全国以后使用“令吉”称呼马来西亚的货币。马来西亚各媒体，教科书，有汉语的官方文件，银行等都一律开始使用这一词。马来西亚规范理事会也把新名称传达给使用汉语的各国驻马大使馆和办事处。值得一提的是，在修改过程中，有不少人提议改名为“灵吉”，但这一方案始终没有被规范理事会接受，而造成一些人对规范理事会的不满。

令吉的其他非正式称呼

令吉的其他中文譯名有林吉特，這個語彙大多使用於中国大陆，但當地也並用令吉。中華民國《中國國家標準》CNS 12873《貨幣及基金代碼之表示法》與ISO 4217相 對應，也使用林吉特，但臺灣有時也用令吉。香港、澳門則是“令吉”以及“林吉特”都有使用。但是，由于马来语Ringgit一词中的t是没有声音的，這個 譯名并不被马来西亚人認為是合適的。其他的称法還有"马币"和"块"，前者是马来西亚货币的简称，后者則常常出现于口语中。例如，在街上，很多人便常说 xxx块钱，而不说xxx令吉。新加坡也稱令吉，與馬來西亞同。
令吉的旧称法是“元”，虽然在1975年8月便不再官方场合使用，但这个词在非官方场合里还是很普遍。
在提案修改零吉的过程中，不少人提出灵吉一词，但最后这个方案没有被接受。而提议使用“灵吉”是因为有些人认为这词比“令吉”更有好预兆。
令吉最小单位的官方称呼是仙(Sen)，其他的称呼有“角”、＂分＂和＂毛＂，这些称法多出现于口语。例如，在街上，很多人常说xxx“分”或xxx“毛”，比较少说xxx仙。
