In China, Warren Buffett is invariably referred to as the "god of stocks." Chinese can't get enough of him: Two of his biographies are the No. 1 and No. 2 best-sellers on dangdang.com, China's equivalent of Amazon.com, ranking ahead of bios of such notable people as Jack Welch, Bill Clinton and Bill Gates. I read my first Buffett book, the Chinese translation of Roger Lowenstein's "Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist," in 1997. It was impossible not to -- everybody was talking about it.
But fears of flooding remained elsewhere. Officials warned that heavy rain forecast for early in the week could weaken some of the 391 reservoirs that dot the region and threaten thousands of people downstream. Also at flooding risk, authorities said, were areas adjoining 21 rivers blocked by huge landslides.

Taiwan's opposition nationalists have won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections, according to official results. The Kuomintang, which favors closer ties to China, won 72% of the seats in the 113-seat chamber. Independence-leaning President Chen Shui-bian conceded defeat and said he would resign as chairman of his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The elections are being viewed as a barometer for Taiwan's presidential poll to be held in March.
