Awareness Ribbons
Pink ribbons are meant to raise awareness of breast cancer; red ribbons remind us of AIDS; blue ribbons symbolize the fight against child abuse, prostate cancer and second-hand smoke; yellow ribbons welcomed home the US hostages in Iran in 1981, and await deployed US soldiers today. It all started with the yellow ribbon mentioned in a song sung by members of the US Cavalry, which inspired the '70s hit, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Ole Oak Tree." In 1991, Jeremy Irons became the first celebrity to wear an awareness ribbon onscreen. The red ribbon he sported at the Tony Awards signified his support of AIDS awareness. Today is World AIDS Day.
