Huntington’s disease is awful. It slowly robs its victims of mobility, wits and emotions. And there is no cure. Yet a small band of neuroscientists who have been studying it suggest the underlying cause of Huntington’s might also be one of the driving forces behind the expansion of the human brain. Huntington’s, these people suspect, may be a price humanity pays for being clever http://econ.st/1xcxA4f

Could the key to the evolution of the human brain be found in a dreadful illness?

Biofilms are a problem in medicine. When bacteria gang up to form the continuous sheets that bear this name they are far harder to kill with antibiotics than when they just float around as individual cells. But Matthew Chang, a biochemical engineer at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, has worked out a new way to attack them http://econ.st/15ra5JV

On this date in 1859, Charles Gounod's opera, Faust, premiered in Paris. Though it got off to a rocky start, after delays and rejections (because it wasn't "showy" enough), the opera became a mainstay of many of the opera theaters over the years. New York's Metropolitan Opera House opened with a production of Faust in 1883. Gounod based his opera on the German alchemist who, according to legend, sold his soul to the devil in exchange for youth, power and knowledge. The opera's libretto was written by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré.
