TOP STORY

A consortium led by Richard Branson's Virgin Group has been picked by the British government as the preferred bidder for Northern Rock, the troubled lender, and plans to repay 11 billion pounds ($22.6 billion) quickly to the Bank of England.

The deal could still face resistance from shareholders, including two hedge funds that own large stakes in Northern Rock and have urged it not to hold a fire sale of its assets.

Separately, The Telegraph reported Sunday that Warren E. Buffett has held talks with three other Northern Rock suitors about potentially joining the bidding.

Wikipedia article "Fire sale".

A fire sale is the sale of goods at extremely low prices, typically when the seller faces bankruptcy or other impending distress. Perhaps originally based on a sale of goods at a heavy discount due to fire damage.

Use in sports

In professional sports, a fire sale occurs when a team ships many of its veteran players to other teams for less expensive players, usually for financial reasons. The term is generally thought of as separate from merely "rebuilding", because during rebuilding, teams often obtain players who are in the major leagues already or who are close to being major-league-ready. On the other hand, trades in a fire sale often result in a team receiving draft picks and prospects who have little to no major-league experience in their sport. The term comes from the perception that most teams in the aftermath of a fire sale are poor-performing, thus being in a "hellish" season.
