winkle, twinkie, quickie, Confit (French), piece of cake

Twinkies

A Twinkie is a "Golden Sponge Cake with Creamy Filling" popular in the United States and elsewhere in North America. It is distributed by Continental Baking Co., which is owned by Kansas City-based Interstate Bakeries Corporation.

Spotlight:

How did Twinkies get their name? The creator of the cream-filled sponge cake, Jimmy Dewar, was driving down to St. Louis to present his sweet snack, when he saw a billboard advertising Twinkle Toe Shoes, and he decided to call his little cakes Twinkies. Containing about 145 calories apiece, Twinkies are comfort food; they're sweet and light and easy to eat. Everyone makes fun of them. Very few people will admit to it, but someone in America is eating an awful lot of them. Hostess sold about 500,000,000 Twinkies last year. First invented on this date in 1930, Twinkies became a lunch box favorite and were a snack food of choice to satisfy the need for a mid-afternoon sugar fix. In 1999, US President Bill Clinton chose a package of Twinkies as one of the "enduring American icons" to be preserved in the nation's millennium time capsule.

THE CHEF: DAVID KINCH; By Fat Transformed: The Confit, in All Its Splendor

Confit (French) is a generic term for various kinds of food that have been immersed in a substance for both flavor and preservation. Sealed and stored in a cool place, confit can last for several months, and can be reheated to extend its useful life. Confit is one of the oldest ways to preserve food, and is a speciality of southwestern France.

[edit] Etymology

The word comes from the French verb confire (to preserve), which in turn comes from the Latin word (conficere), meaning "to do, to produce, to make, to prepare." The French verb was first applied in medieval times to fruits cooked and preserved in sugar.

A deep fried twinkie

A deep-fried Twinkie involves freezing the popular Hostess Twinkie cake, dipping it into batter and deep frying it to create a variation on the traditional snack cake. According to the Hostess website, Christopher Sell invented the "fried twinkie" at the ChipShop, his restaurant in Brooklyn, New York.[5] According to CNN, the dish was adopted by Chris Mullen, but invented at a "Brooklyn restaurant."

The nou QUICKIE has one meaning:
Meaning #1: hurried repair
Synonyms: band aid, quick fix, quicky

piece of cake
Something easily accomplished, as in I had no trouble finding your house--a piece of cake. This expression originated in the Royal Air Force in the late 1930s for an easy mission, and the precise reference is as mysterious as that of the simile easy as pie. Possibly it evokes the easy accomplishment of swallowing a slice of sweet dessert.
