Taking the Plunge
Don't try this on a full stomach. Hersheypark's newest roller coaster, called Fahrenheit, is set to open next month. It joins the Sooperdooperlooper, the Lightning Racer and seven other heart-stopping rides at the Pennsylvania amusement park, which opened 101 years ago today. The newest roller coaster will take riders on a series of loops, high-speed bank curves, climbs and a 97-degree drop — the steepest roller coaster drop in the US — in 85 seconds. On their backs as the coaster train begins a 90-degree ascent to the summit of a 121-foot/37-meter lift, riders will lean forward at the crest of the hill and see no track visible below — just open space — before plummeting down.

"My favorite part of a roller-coaster ride is when you're going up and you're slightly scared and really excited. You don't know what's coming next but you know it's going to be good. You can't handle it, go on the carousel."Gina Gershon
