British-born artist, Douglas Chandor (1897-1953) painted this, the only known sitting portrait, of Eleanor Roosevelt in 1949. It appeared in the June 18, 1952 issue of Life Magazine. Chandor painted over 300 portraits over his career. He died of a stroke just days after returning to the U.S. from painting Queen Elizabeth II.
