What was the first professional baseball team? Baseball's first pro team was the Cincinnati Red Stockings of 1869. Up till then, a few baseball clubs paid individual players, but in 1869, Cincinnati became the first to pay all 10 of its members. The club's first manager was Harry Wright, who assembled and managed that first team and also played center field. They played as part of the National Association of Base Ball Players. With an assembly of salaried professionals, the Cincinnati Red Stockings toured the US in 1869, remaining undefeated throughout the season. After a strong 1870 season, both the NABBP and the team folded, and Wright took many of the team's stars and moved to Boston, establishing the Boston Red Stockings in 1871. At the same time, the first professional baseball league — National Association of Professional Base Ball Players — was founded. Wright, who was born on January 10, 1835, helped to shape pro baseball. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.
