獵豹在貓科中，屬於貓亞科，有單獨的屬、種。不像歸類上花豹和美洲豹等之間有密切關係，它們與獵豹僅同為貓科。而花豹、虎、獅、美洲豹等均歸類為豹亞科，豹屬。

有關獵豹的學名，「屬」的Acinonyx源自希臘語，作「不能動的爪」解，獵豹不能縮入腳爪，也是貓科動物唯一無法伸縮爪子的物種，可增加獵捕時的攻擊力，腳底粗糙的肉墊，可增加在奔跑時的抓地力，較普通貓科較長的尾巴可以保持於奔跑時的平衡。「種」的 jubatus則衍生自拉丁語的iuba，即「馬的鬃毛」，指小獵豹的長毛。

主要歐洲語言中的獵豹一詞，源自拉丁語的gattus pardus，解作「像貓的豹」，如法語的guépard、義大利語的ghepardo、西班牙語的guepardo、葡萄牙語的guepardo（和chita）、德語的Gepard。英語的cheetah則來自印地語的chita，也可能來自梵文中的chitraka，意指「有斑點的」。

不同於其他貓科動物，成年母獵豹並沒有主要的地盤，而想要避開其他的獵豹。公獵豹有時會組成小團體，通常是從同一家庭來的。
