佈雷艇亦稱為佈雷艦，是一種用來設置水雷的軍艦。佈雷艇的噸位不一，有的只有幾百噸。而有的則和驅逐艦大小相當。在第二次世界大戰中，英國海軍的大型佈雷艇也作為運輸艦使用。因佈雷任務可以經由別的艦種兼任完成，所以佈雷艦逐漸被淘汰。

護衛艦（英語：corvette）是噸位高於巡邏艦，小於巡防艦，搭載輕武裝的艦艇，等級上是屬沿岸海域（綠水海軍）的中型艦艇，近代海軍中多半是排水量1千至2千噸的水準，偶爾會有超過2500噸的特例。蘇軍與解放軍則將其與巡防艦一起稱呼之。日本也因為特殊的國防定位，所有的船艦都屬護衛艦的稱號。
