This spectacular crystal skull was originally believed to have been made by the Aztecs, but its story is complex. The first clue that revealed its true identity was found when it went for scientific analysis. Machine-made cut marks were found in the highly polished surface of the teeth. So, if it were from Mexico, it must have been made after the arrival of the Spanish in 1519. Further tests revealed the quartz was extracted in the 19th century from Brazil or Madagascar – far beyond ancient Aztec trading links. The Museum acquired the skull from New York jewellers Tiffany & Co. in 1898 http://ow.ly/JCuC305VkTe

Each year since 1988 the Circle has presented the Critics' Circle Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts, voted for by all members of the Circle. The award takes the form of an engraved crystal rose bowl presented at a celebratory luncheon. The 2008 winner was Peter Brook.

And while patrons prepare for celebratory cocktail parties with prime bridge views, the lights will also be visible, for free.

“The great thing about public arts is it does not cost anything to see,” Mr. Baume said. “There are no tickets for admission, it is there for everybody.”

 rosé
