Back in the “Mad Men” era, Colgate toothpaste -- then still known as Colgate Dental Cream -- promised that its “secret ingredient,” Gardol, would form an “invisible shield” that protected the mouth from tooth decay and bad breath. Decades later, the unseen barrier is back, this time guarding body parts that are due north.
In a multimedia campaign now under way, the Medtech Products division of Prestige Brands Holdings is introducing two versions of an over-the-counter product named Allergen Block, a treatment that is meant to alleviate nasal-allergy symptoms by keeping allergens from entering the nose. The drug-free topical gel, which comes in a tube, is applied around the nostrils and between the nose and upper lip -- where, the company promises, it forms an “invisible shield” (or an “invisible barrier,” in some ads) that helps block airborne allergens.
