Disability is a condition that affects a person's physical or mental ability to perform certain activities, with definitions varying by context, such as social, legal, and health-related. It can be a physical, cognitive, developmental, sensory, or mental impairment that, through interaction with environmental and personal barriers, hinders a person's full and effective participation in society. Disabilities can be present from birth or acquired during a person's lifetime and are not always visible.
Definitions and types
General:
A physical or mental impairment that limits one or more major life activities.
Social/WHO:
An interaction between a health condition and environmental and personal factors, which can include negative attitudes and inaccessible environments.

Legal (SSA):
An inability to engage in any substantial gainful activity due to a medically determinable physical or mental impairment expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death.
Types:
Disabilities can be physical, sensory (like blindness or hearing impairments), intellectual, developmental, mental, or chronic.
Key characteristics

Disability is not solely about the individual's condition but also about how environmental and attitudinal barriers prevent participation.
Impact:
A disability can make certain activities more difficult, restrict participation, and lead to poorer health outcomes or limitations in daily functioning.
Visibility:
Disabilities can be readily visible or invisible.
Diversity:
People with disabilities are a diverse group, and their experiences are influenced by factors like age, gender, race, and economic situation.
